Coming September 1: The Art of Resistance Podcast

There's a reason books are banned. There’s a reason politicians freak out regularly about the music. There's a reason autocrats and dictators take control of media.

Art – books, music, film, performance - is resistance.

There’s a long history of people making art as resistance when times were bad. What can we learn from them? What can we as creative people do in this world of chaos and backlash? Because we are all creative. We can all finds ways to resist.

And that’s what this show is about.

From Rebel Yell Creative, this is The Art of Resistance, a podcast about channeling our rage into creation, and using writing, music, and all kinds of art to resist the status quo.

I’m your host and producer Amy Lee Lillard, and I’m an author and podcaster who’s been obsessing over writers and artists who resisted since I was a kid. And today, I’m looking to make all the weird art, and help others do the same.

Season 1 starts September 1, with episodes about:

  • Riot Grrrl, women punks and teenage girls in the 90s who fought for feminism with music and zines

  • Gran Fury, queer widowers in the 80s who made posters and performance art to drive the fight against AIDS

  • Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore, surrealist artists in the 40s who turned Germans into dissenters during a Nazi occupation

  • Emory Douglas, a black artist in the 60s who created the voice and the look of the Black Panthers

And more, including Samizdat, Chicana artists and the Zapatistas, and Sins Invalid.

Follow the Art of Resistance wherever you listen to podcasts.
