Why do so many podcasts fail? Creators don't ask themselves key questions...
In the Podcast Roadmap, you'll walk through each step of the podcast process. Here's an excerpt.
If you're thinking of making a podcast: good move! Podcasts are a cost-effective, highly-attractive way to get your message to listeners. And if you're wanting to reframe your work as resistance, it's an excellent way to reach people who will support you.
How does a beginner start a podcast? The same as a pro: First ask yourself some questions.
Goals: What are your short-term and long-term goals? Think high-level and on a smaller scale. By considering your goals, you can develop a show that will help you achieve them.
Gaps: Where are the gaps in your current marketing? Often, no matter how successful your current outreach is, you may want to reach additional groups or people. Think about who you wish you could reach, and what you wish they knew about you.
Appeal: What is appealing about podcasts? We all hear about podcasts as the powerful tool they can be. Plus, the bar for entry can be low; you can be a beginner, do it DIY, and can essentially make a podcast for free. But what specifically appeals to you about podcasts? What podcasts do you listen to, and why?
Purpose: What do you hope your podcast will do for you? While podcasts are powerful and empowering, they may not be the right tool for every goal and every purpose. Mapping these out helps you spot any disconnect.
Teams: Who works on marketing and creative now, and how much time do you/they have to devote to tasks? A podcast will work if you are consistent in content, release schedule, and quality. That depends mightily on what time and space you have available in your team.
Budget: What funds do you have for a new project? While podcasts are a low-cost tool to start, having funds to support podcast growth will be a tool for success. Whether it's paying an external podcast producer to help you meet time demands, or using money to advertise your podcast, knowing your budget will be crucial.
Taking the time to think through these questions will be an excellent start to your podcast development. But there are many more things to think about and explore along the road.
